Scott’s Journal
En route to Philadelphia
It was to be a celebrated reunion between my cousin and her grandfather, however, now I’m not certain what will be waiting for us in Philadelphia. Kinsey’s confession of never corresponding with her grandfather caught me off guard, although I should have been aware of what now seems like obvious signs that something was wrong. I have learned that my little cousin believes in “statements of convenience”. This “statement” might not necessarily be true but if it is inserted correctly into a conversation it can “conveniently” keep someone out of trouble. In my book, a “statement of convenience” is the same as a “lie”. I have also learned Kinsey can take truths and convenient statements and weave them together like a fine tapestry. Yesterday, I took the first step in convincing my cousin she needs to rethink her behavior. I sense this is going to be a long journey filled with a lot of convincing.
I’m uncertain what decisions will be made after our visit to Philadelphia. Kinsey has made it adamantly clear she will not be returning to Melbourne and is quite capable of fending for herself. When I pressed her for more details, my cousin felt being a gypsy fortune teller would be terribly romantic. Considering how she plays poker, I think a riverboat would be the better setting. I can understand why there is a reluctance to return to the social circles in Australia. She seemed happier standing knee-deep in mud rescuing a calf than standing center stage at the Melbourne Cup. I watched her embrace the time she spent on the ranch, which is why my gut is telling me, Philadelphia is not going to work out as planned. I need to talk to Murdoch upon our return to share my thoughts on what to do.
Then there is Johnny. I am suspicious my younger brother spotted Kinsey’s “statements of convenience” early on, kept his mouth shut and hoped for the best. I know he’s grown closer to Kinsey during this trip. Hopefully, he has also grown a bit wiser. While I’m writing, I’ve noticed Johnny has been watching Kinsey watching the scenery pass by for the…
“…last thirty minutes you have been staring at me, Johnny. Is there something you wish to ask?”
“Well, darlin’, yes there is”
“Then ask it. No one is stopping you.”
“The Good Sisters of Mercy in Sacramento, that’s the best you could come up with?”
Kinsey, not wanting to smile, returned to her view out the window.
“Scott, wouldn’t you agree? Half-pint you needed to put a little more thought into that.”
Stifling a laugh, Kinsey instead snorted.
Scott rolled his eyes.
It is going to be a long journey, indeed.
