Garrett's Gallop

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

February 1870 - As Scott walked down the row of stables he recalled a recent lecture he’d given his little brother on how curiosity had killed the cat. Scott made a mental note to never tell Johnny how his older brother ended up on this day to be standing in front of a horse named Garrett’s Gallop.

The stable hand anticipated Scott’s arrival and had the horse brought out for inspection. Scott was impressed with the horse’s stature and breeding. Kinsey might have a winner here.

Speaking of Kinsey….Scott watched as she and her entourage of reporters and photographers swooped in to capture her every move. Soon Scott and Garrett’s Gallop were caught up in the mayhem of questions and photographs. For a brief moment it appeared Kinsey wanted to ask him a question but it quickly passed as she was swept off to her next appointment. Scott found the whole experience over whelming.

Garrett’s Gallop looked bored.

Imagine Scott’s surprise when receiving the next morning’s paper to spy a photograph of Kinsey and himself on the front page. Even more of a surprise was the caption stating not only was he Kinsey’s escort to tomorrow’s Melbourne Cup but part owner of Garrett’s Gallop. Scott shook his head and grinned. This girl was a master of the social circle.
